  • Follow me on Twitter

When I first started this blog, I still had a day job. This meant going out my doorat 7 am and coming home at like 8 or 9 pm at night. Twitter was the last thing on
    my mind at the time.

Despite my old friends at my day job telling me I'd never make it out of the "rat race",
in September of 2009 I went full time and now find Twitter even more important.

Follow me on Twitter for exciting stories from the halls of top New York modeling
agencies to the cobblestone streets of Europe.

Kate King (Ford, NY) joins the New Era of Models Off Duty

When I started this blog back in 2007, there was no such thing as the fashion world using twitter, using instagram, using Tumblr.

That's all changed for me and it's all changed for the modeling world too. Previous to the internet, models received their booking value through Runway, Campaigns, and Editorials. Now, models get their booking value through Social Media, which combines their street style presence via Social Media with their own social media channels like twitter, instagram, and Tumblr.

Even Supermodel Karolina Kurkova recently exhorted models, "It is no longer enough to just look beautiful and be in great shape. You need to be interesting." The fact of the matter is, as bloggers can now create their own booking value via developing online presence, so models can create their own booking value too. This translates into more money.

Trey Laird, Creative Director for Laird & Partners, the advertising agency which represents Juicy Couture (cha-ching, Steven Meisel shoots for them for a reason) confirms Kurkova's exhortation in financial terms “It’s not just enough to cast such-and-such a girl that opened Prada or Vuitton or whatever,” . “It’s a huge help if a girl already has a platform and followers, and Kate Upton is a great example of that.”

  • Edie Campbell: death defying model

    Edie Campbell: death defying model

Edie Campbell (DNA, NY) proves she is a force to be reckoned with and a spirited survivor of any test this world can throw at her. If you hadn't already known, Edie was succumbed to death threats delivered to her via her twitter account which you can read about HERE in the Telegraph UK arcticle. Apparently, after a shoot with Harry Styles, fanatical fans issued death threats via twitter threatening Edie's life if she were to ever go near Harry again. Granted, these threats were text words and could've have been just empty threats. Nevertheless, when it comes to one who is a public figure, death threats shouldn't be treated lightly. Yet despite these death threats, she has since reinstated her twitter account. She is forging ahead bravely and courageously, a real role model to the entire world that when death comes knocking at your door, you don't have to run, just face it squarely in the eye.

  • Honestly ... I Needed A Good Laugh

    Honestly ... I Needed A Good Laugh

Some sad stuff going on right now - you know?

All over the blogosphere there is heartbreak and loss. And, I have to admit, these stories wear on me and I can't stop thinking about these people I barely know and their stories and their families and their losses.

We lost our dog recently and that was a sad time in our family, but honestly, it does not compare to the loss of a child or a baby or a husband.

And then last night when I was on Twitter (I know - I need to get a real life), I came across this blog and again ... I became really sad. I wanted to help. I wanted to do something - it's my nature - getting involved and fixing things, you know. But - what do you do? Who do you call? How do you fix this sort of thing?

So, just about the moment I think I am going to curl into a ball and cry myself into oblivion from all the sadness and loss - I click on a link that Sandra tweeted on Twitter and suddenly ... I found myself laughing out loud at:

I know - it's silly and even stupid - but ... I needed this laugh. I am still giggling over this silly Ninja guy - *hehehehehe*! Thanks, Sandra.

So - I'm still sad about all of these stories and lives that have been so devastated and affected by so much sadness and loss and I continue to pray for all of these families, but ... man it sure is nice to be reminded that even though life sucks really bad sometimes --- it also offers moments of crazy laughter if you just take the time to search it out.

Okay ... so this video probably isn't funny to everyone, but since I truly believe that I am a Ninja and have Ninjas living in my house - I found it simply hysterical.

If this video didn't tickle your funny bone - I know this one will. Go over and check out this darling giggling boy that also brought a big smile to my face.

PS - Please continue to keep all of these families in your prayers.

Wednesday night at the Crosby Street hotel Tiffany & Co. hosted an event with Christy Turlington's husband Edward Burns, the film director of the Sidewalks of New York. It was a celebration of Burns' directorial collaboration with Tiffany's on a short film titled, "Will You Marry Me?". The film which runs approximately 6 minutes in length and tells the True Love "Romantic and witty stories of proposal from New York City couples" can be viewed on www.whatmakeslovetrue.com. A Q&A between Burns and the audience followed.

A photo booth was set up, where party goers not only received an instant print of their picture, but with the touch of a thumbnail on an Ipad could instantly send that same photo to twitter or facebook.

In a world where people try and connect based who they think they should be instead of making room for who they really are, I found Tiffany Tip #10 "Be True To Yourself" relevant. If true love begins in Central Park, under a spring time sunset breeze with a Tiffany ring to memorialize the moment, all the better.

  • H&M Magazine mini feature

    H&M Magazine mini feature

Occasionally, I like to celebrate press. Nowadays, unlike when I first started the blog, press is a bit of a common experience, so I don't usually post it here. But there's just something about having a feature in H&M magazine -- even if it's a small one -- that makes me excited. Add to that viewing the FW12 preview at H&M's showroom and you get an even more exciting combination of events. Many thanks to the team of editors at Stockholm's BON Magazine for the feature. Also, as a reminder, I'm regularly updating on twitter now if you want to follow me @WhatShaunaThinks

  • Let's Talk A Bit About Blogging

Let's Talk A Bit About Blogging

I read a post on someones site recently where the blogger said something like, "Blogging isn't real - it doesn't mean anything." Or something close to that.

    I couldn't have disagreed more!

I think to some of us - it means a whole lot. I know it does to me.

I have been blogging for a nearly a year and a half and it has been a tremendous blessing in my life. A place for me to write - which I love to do. A place to document my children's lives. A place where I have found a community of friends. It has been tremendously positive.

    But ...

There are certainly things about blogging that I often find frustrating. I know I am not alone, as there are millions of bloggers and we all encounter many of the same issues from day to day.

I'd love to hear some of the things you find frustrating or that make you angry about blogging.

Do you take it too seriously - like I sometimes do?

Do you take things too personally?

Do you get your feelings hurt?

Do you feel rejected and sometimes snubbed?

    Do you feel guilty?

Do you feel competitive with other bloggers?

    Do certain bloggers bug you?

Do you feel like blogging is honest?

I have one of those Follow Me thingys in my sidebar. Recently I noticed when someone stopped following me. I have had people stop following me before and just ignored it and not worried about it. But, this time, I happened to look through my followers to see if I could figure out who it was - I was just curious. I don't keep track of who is there and who isn't, so really - I might be wrong about who I think it was, but I believe I figured it out. Truthfully, I was angry and very tempted to go right to that person's site and stop following them. I really wanted to. But ... I didn't. I decided not to hold it against that person - it just didn't matter.

This is the sort of stuff I HATE about blogging! I hate not knowing why. I hate that I take it so personally. I hate that I truly believe that that person stopped following me out of meanness. I HATE all that stuff!!

I also get a little miffed by those people that have the Follow Me thingy on their site - but don't follow anyone else. What's up with that? It's like on Twitter where they pick and choose who is follow-worthy. I still follow some of those people, but honestly it bugs me! Surely I'm just as follow-worthy as they are?!

I've even considered getting rid of that Follow Me thingy on my site - I think it is just another way for bloggers to feel bad about themselves!

What are some of the not-so-positive things you have experienced in blogging? And, if you have been lucky enough to never have experienced anything negative - please let me know the positive things you love about it.

    Have a great weekend!

  • Why Andie Arthur should walk the next Victoria's Secret show

Why Andie Arthur should walk the next Victoria's Secret show

Andie Arthur (Ford, NY) should definitely walk the 2013 Victoria's Secret show. Here's why:

    1. No one from FORD models walked the 2012 show.

    2. Andie will be 18

    3. Andie knows how to "sell the sizzle". By that I mean, just look at all her street style pictures. She always projects an amazing energy and charisma, which would translate to the runway and catalog, just the kind of personae Victoria's Secret needs representing it's legacy of entertaining Top Models. If she knows how to be "on stage" while Off Duty, she'll definitely know how to be "on stage" while On Duty (on the runway or TV interviews etc).

    4. Andie is Social Media savvy. Not only do her Twitter and Instagram handles match, but interacts with her followers, connecting with them and giving them something to relate to.

  • Unveiling Kenneth Cole's 2d consecutive blogger event: Rebel Without A Cause (but not without a collection)

Unveiling Kenneth Cole's 2d consecutive blogger event: Rebel Without A Cause (but not without a collection)

A birds eye view of the showroom. Note the oversized bean bags in the back that were provided for people to lounge in while watching James Dean's Rebel Without A Cause

    Strong leather accessories were everywhere

    a bag

    jewelry

animal print platform loafers for her

belted shearling ankle boots for him

    belted collar on winter coat

belted collar again, only this time not so visible

    patent black leather belt

double strapped partial belt collar detail

food and beverages were served in abundance.

miniature POP champagne bottles were served by waiters

bartenders stayed busy by making Rebel Rouser cocktails, with Medea Vodka, white cranberry juice, topped with Sprite and white grape garnish

Medea Vodka bottles had a built in digital ticker tape that scrolled Kenneth Cole. Goody bags were given, each inscribed with a special Kenneth Cole message

Then Kenneth Cole showed up and people flocked around him.

Kenneth gave a brief talk on his collection and the event

Kenneth managed the usual obligatory photos with elegant aplomb. Here with Karen of Where Did You Get That (L) and Christina from Trop Rouge

And here with Sonia from Runway Hippie and Karl Edwin Guerre from Swagger360

Ingo Wilts, Kenneth Cole's Creative Director was also on hand to mingle and answer questions

Power bloggers were also present: including Style Caster and Connie Wang from Refinery29. WWD.com and Elle.com were also there to name a few.

After Kenneth talked, people mingled. Check out the "blogs love traffic" helmut, for use on a moped.

A giant Twitter screen updated itself in real time, dramatizing the speed and virability (sounds like a word!) at which information flows on the internet. Glamour.com's Tracey Lomrantz tweeting.

according to Runway Hippie, Kenneth Cole doesn't like french fries

after everyone mingled, people picked up popcorn (Lime Salt, Truffled Parmesan, or Cinnamon Butter) and prepared themselves for the movie.

    witty sayings on the pillows

Rebel Without A Cause then played

waiters served refreshments during the movie

    James Dean

    THE END

Last night Kenneth Cole held his second consecutive Blogger event celebrating the roots behind Kenneth's FW2011 line as found in James Dean's Rebel Without a Cause. Bloggers enjoyed exclusive previews of Kenneth Cole's FW11 line at the Kenneth Cole studios on West 50th street.

The pictures pretty much tell the story. Clothes were admired, champagne was served, Kenneth Cole mingled with the bloggers, popcorn and refreshments were served, and people watched James Dean's Rebel Without A Cause. Thanks to the Kenneth Cole team for everything!

    Now on Instagram Desktop! @WhatShaunaThinks

So instagram just released a desktop version for surfing their photos, which now includes more of my pictures including Rihanna from yesterday's Victoria's Secret show. As you might already know, Instagram gained over 100 million users in less than half the time it took Twitter to do the same.
