Style Hunting with Copenhagen Street Style

Jenny and Soren from Copenhagen Street Style

    Soren in action.

What a great pleasure it was today to meet Copenhagen's landmark to street fashion, Jenny and Soren from Copenhagen Street Style. I met them at the Danish Design Center where they have a special exhibit among other leading fashion insiders in Copenhagen.

I had the privilege of asking a few quesitons. "What do you find most fulfilling about taking street style photographs?" To which they replied, "Challenging the fashion hierarchy" (see top left of first pic). Then when I asked them, "What's important to you about challenging the fashion hierarchy?" they replied, "It provides an alternative to what the mainstream says is 'in'" I hope they keep up the great work for years to come!

Now for a few street hunting pics:

Karolina also chose a 3 month old puppy, Daphne.

Edward Barsanian of the New York Times - T Magazine.

Of this gentleman, Karolina said, "I like his little Russian hat. It's smart and he's staying warm, which is very important. It's different. You know I don't see a lot of men wearing those kinds of hats and he's owning it. I like that"

Tuesday afternoon as part of the Mercedes Benz Fashion Force program, I was offered a car ride with Karolina Kurkova (discovered by Miuccia Prada at age 15 and later a Victoria's Secret Angel). We weren't exactly police men in that black and white car though, more like street style bounty hunters as Karolina kept a keen eye for stylish peeps on the street--from twins, to a T Magazine editor, to a 3 month old puppy....And not only did Karolina act as the street style hunter de jour, but I also got to ask her a few questions while we drove:Craig: When you were a little girl, what did you dream of being when you grew up?

Karolina: I wanted to be a princess. I wanted to have super long hair. When i was a little girl I had short hair. ... I was like a little tomboy. And I'd walk around and put a tiara on and I'd put a duvet [editors note: duvet = bed sheet] on my head like I'd have super long hair to the floor and I'd wear my mom's high heels and walk around.

Craig: If you could wake up anywhere in the world tomorrow, where would it be?

Karolina: Somewhere on the beach. This beautiful beach. Sun is shining...(pause)...sun of the ocean...it could be anywhere. I just love the beach. I love the sunset and watching the ocean and hearing the sound.

Craig: so what are you wearing today?

Karolina: I'm wearing a J. Mendel coat, nice and warm. And then I'm wearing Hervé Léger--let me show you. I'm wearing a dress and over the dress I'm wearing an Hervé Léger skirt. So I'm kind of layering and playing with his clothes to make my own. And make it so I feel comfortable, yet stylish but at the same time comfortable and me. And then I'm wearing Brian Atwood beautiful patent leather shiny boots....

  • New York Street Style: Summer time on Elizabeth Street

New York Street Style: Summer time on Elizabeth Street

If you ever have the opportunity to walk down Elizabeth Street between Houston and
Prince during the summer, look for an old man tanning on the side of the road--he's a dying breed of Old School New York. He lays by the road reclining on a lawn chair and sun tans in front of everybody while the cars go whisking by. This guy also has a habit of releasing the water from the fire hydrant across the street, creating himself into a somewhat of a tourist attraction.

As soon as I saw the water gushing forth from the fire hydrant, I knew I had to have a picture with that classic New York summertime symbol in the background. The window of opportunity was open, I staked my ground, and waited.

After waiting about an hour, this couple walked through my path. I like the imperfection in his rolled up sleeves...it's imperfect but he still looks interesting.

Long post I know, so I'll leave the rest to you. :)

  • The Path That Is My Life

The Path That Is My Life

When I was a little girl - I was often lonely, as some girls are.

    I never quite fit in.

I wondered if I would find my way.

I always felt as though I was on my right path, but ... I often walked alone.

When I grew up ... I looked back and I realized that it was not a winding road.

It was as if I could look down a long straight tunnel and I could see clearly who that girl was and where she was going.

She seldom veered off the trail that would lead her into her life.

She kept her eyes on the light at the end of that lonely tunnel and she constantly moved towards it.

I don't know if this is how it is for every young girl, but I am grateful for the choices this young girl made.

    Grateful for her strength.

    For her focus.

For the drive that pushed that little girl to where she ended up in her life.

I am grateful that she was smart and stubborn.

That she was determined and ambitious.

That she learned to persevere through turmoil and pain.

I am thankful for that path and that she was wise enough to keep on it and push herself towards the end.

I am no longer that little girl, but ...

I remain on that right path and while the end is far out in front of me ... I see it clearly.

Just as I always have ...

    I see it clearly.

    And ...

I no longer see the past as a tunnel, but more as a funnel that has delivered me to where I am.

I have not always made the right choices and I know there will be many wrong ones still to come.

What I do know is this ...

I am proud of that little girl ...

I am amazed by where she has led me ...

I am thankful she held my hand ...

    And ...

    I am no longer alone.

    ********************************

When I would visit my grandmother up on Herman Street - I would pick apples from the tree in the side yard. I'd gather those apples up and run quickly to the front porch and dump them in a pile on the swing. I'd run into the house for a shaker of salt and then race back out to the porch, find me a spot on the floor or banister and spend the afternoon eating salted apples and watching the world go by.

In my life ... I have often said, "We have come a long way since Herman Street," and we have - I have. I still love salted apples and all the memories that were made up in that old house with family and loved ones. I also love that when I look back at my life - down the long road - I can see Herman Street as clearly as it is in this photo. It is a part of who I was and it is a part of who I am.

Herman Street is just one of many streets I have traveled on in the path that is my life - but ... in many ways, it is where it all started and in many ways ... it is where I still go.

Lately, I have been there ... if only briefly ... to remember the view from ... the beginning of my life.

Models Street Style: Catherine McNeil with NEXT Models NY

With the opening of the Metropolitan Museum's exhibition The Model As Muse: Embodying Fashion starting today, the May issue of Vogue U.S.'s pages on Models Street Style, an April model-centric Harper's Bazaar, and a new fashion month Models Off Duty section at Teen Vogue.com, I felt it was appropriate to celebrate the possible re-emergence of the model as a fashion icon by sharing an entire week's worth of models street style.

What makes these photos special is that they will all be from the streets of New York, sans any fashion month flashbacks. Imagine jumping in front of a model on the street, pausing very briefly while you study the face behind the sunglasses and opening with, "Hey, you're Catherine McNeil!"

Teen Vogue.com and altamira: a new partnership for fashion month

As I write this, my hands are actually a bit sweaty. Maybe it's the old fight or flight response mechanism inside of me, knowing that some of the country's top editors will be watching my work. Frankly, I think it's the excitement of knowing that I'll be the first photographer to be hired by Teen Vogue.com for New York, London, and Paris Fashion Week to capture models street style and "it" girls street style--close up shots might be included too. An endeavor to be taken seriously, no doubt.
So for future reference, I'm going to ask that you click on the Teen Vogue.com banner links inside my posts and check out their new street style section for fashion week. The photos will be exclusive for use by Teen Vogue, so you won't be able to see them here. So go check out what's probably the first street style shot EVER, of FORD Supermodel of the World 2009 Winner, 14 year old modeling sensation Tayane Leao at Teen Vogue.com!.

Thursday night Atelier celebrated it's official relocation from it's old location on Crosby Street in Soho to it's new location at 304 Hudson Street.

If you haven't had a chance to visit Atelier in New York City, add it to your list of stores to visit right now! Atelier offers the most prestigious variety of Avant-garde designers I've ever seen from a boutique: from Eurpean based labels like Austrian designer Carol Christian Poell to Ann Demeulemeester of the Antwerp Six....to Asian based labels like Yoji Yamamoto and Julius.

Besides chatting with Roger and Mauricio from MAO PR, I had the opportunity to chat with my all time favorite designer Alexander Plokhov, the designer for the label that was Cloak. Funny how when I met Mr. Plokhov, I just so happend to be wearing my Cloak military inspired black oxford with a double asymmetrical button line flowing from the shoulder down diagonally across the chest.

    Great night overall.

  • Chasing down Mauri Weakley

    Chasing down Mauri Weakley

So I'm riding my 4th bike of this spring/summer season (the other 3 were stolen, can you believe that?) up Prince street when I spot the most awesome high waisted skirt and striped top off in the distance. Only it was like 2 blocks away and I had to hurry up and catch up with her. So I daredeviled my way past every single tourist on Prince, wove through the crowds, and finally rode up alongside Mauri Weakley, the Visual Merchandiser for Steven Alan.

I asked her if I could take a picture while we were both still pedaling our bikes down the street-- heck I even handed her my business card while we both were still pedaling our bikes. I must admit, I was grateful, in a way, that a beautiful New Yorker like Mauri would be willing to have her picture taken by some stranger who first approached her while huffing and puffing next to her on a bike in the middle of the street. Ha!

  • Welcome to Michele McNally, Horatio Silva, Anne Christensen, and the N.Y. Times...revisiting vintage altamira

Welcome to Michele McNally, Horatio Silva, Anne Christensen, and the N.Y. Times...revisiting vintage altamira

Anne Christensen on Sixth Avenue outside of the tents during fashion week. The movement of the person in the background suggests how challening it was to weave through people at New York Fashion Week, let alone get a clear picture.

I found Carine Roitfeld fun and really cooperative with my requests. Instead of shooting a full body picture of her, this close-up picture of her wearing a hoodie with the wind blowing her hair was captivating. Notice the cab driver in the background.

This is Brian Ermanski and this is not his kid, nor is it mine. This little boy curiously walked in on the photo wanting to see what was going on. A delightful moment in time caught on camera for years to come.

The editorial style pose in this picture still rivets my attention. You might be able to notice the guy in background looking back, wondering what was going on.

I was walking across Lafayette Street when I heard the putter coming from the engine on this man's moped. Not only are the different historical references in his outfit mesmerizing, but the fact that the foreground is juxtaposed against a background of people and buildings from 2007, give this photo a paradoxical feel.

This is Sato. I like his absolutely couture approach to avant-garde style.

This is one of the first photos I took at London Fashion Week. Not only did I think her outfit was superb, but I deliberately left the street sign in the composition in the background for added visual impact.

Androgyny fascinates me when it is artfully expressed. The perfect hairline on this girl, her still facial expression, and the curved lines which lead to the dual decker bus in London in the background made for an intersting shot.

I always admire people who defy modern fashion in favor of retro-style couture. Notice the leading lines of the row of homes, leading off into the far distance, where you can see Londoners going about their daily business.

The outfit is inspiring and so is the fact that you can see the words "London Fashion Week" on the car doors in the background.

At the end of the Donna Karen show at New York Fashion Week, the fire department showed up. I'm guessing there was a report that the building had violated some fire code and the excess crowd was causing street congestion. While the lights from the F.D.N.Y. truck in the background were going off, I was able to snap this shot of well know model Irina Kulikova.

New York City Street Style: motorized vintage bikes
