The Paradox of Tom Pecheux's Balmain Make Up: nude for Spring '11 and Fall '11

NUDE FOR SS17: Isabeli Fontana (Brazil) exits the SS17 Balmain show at Paris Fashion Week in October with hardly a hint of make up.

NUDE FOR FW11: Arizona Muse (USA) exits the FW11 show at Paris Fashion Week with hardly a hint of make up

HOW SHE WORE IT: Isabeli Fontana (Brazil)

HOW SHE WORE IT: Arizona Muse (USA)

The make up genius behind Balmain, Ralph Lauren, Derek Lam, Altuzarra, the Victoria's Secret show, and the SS17 Estée Lauder campaign is Tom Pecheux. He is needless to say, another World Thought Leader when it comes to make up. What I found interesting is how Tom chose a virtually nude make up aesthetic for both the SS17 and FW11 Balmain shows. When you think Balmain, you think Rock and Roll Edge. I know I would assume that Rock and Roll edge would be filled with a Debbie Harry like character -- with a stark black palette of mascara and strong eye shadow.

But, in both seasons, Tom Pecheux preserved the models original beauty. It's what British Vogue called, "a nude face becomes an aesthetic of its own this season, pointing to a woman that is completely at home in her own skin." American Vogue quoted Pecheux for the SS17 show "It's about what you don't see" and for the FW 11 show "...we want the girls to look like themselves".

Ultimately, this creates more booking value for the model too, since it makes their face more recognizable and memorable to key editors, photographers, and stylists--unlike other directional shows where the girl hides behind a mask or looks like a clown.

Something to think about next time you don your Balmain.

  • Pat McGrath's Lip Trends: Red for Spring '11 and Burgundy for Fall '11

Pat McGrath's Lip Trends: Red for Spring '11 and Burgundy for Fall '11

RED FOR SS17: Martha Streck (Brazil) exits the SS17 Gucci show with tomato red lacquered lips, via Pat McGrath's Jerry Hall inspiration.

DEEP RED FOR FW11: Caroline Brasch Nielsen (Denmark) exits the FW11 Gucci show in Milan with burgundy lacquered lips, paying homage to Pat McGrath's sophisticated 70's inspiration.

HOW SHE WORE IT: Martha Streck (Brazil)

HOW SHE WORE IT: Caroline Brasch Nielsen (Denmark)

The make up genius behind Gucci, YSL, Prada, Louis Vuitton, and Miu Miu among other shows is Pat McGrath. So it's safe to say she's pretty much the World Thought Leader when it comes to make up. Think Jerry Hall for this Spring as seen on Martha at the SS17 Gucci show and a more sophisticated 70's look for this winter as seen on Caroline at the FW11 Gucci show. Last night was epic in terms of personal milestone's as I was offered the unique opportunity to shoot the behind the scenes action of the Victoria's Secret for Pelotonia.org drive. Pelotonia describes itself as "a grassroots bike tour with 1 goal: to end cancer." So, 5 angels rode for the Pelotonia Charity mission to end cancer, including Alessandra Ambrosio, Candice Swanepoel, Lily Aldridge, Lindsay Ellingson, and Erin Heatherton.

The night started early at Milk Studios were the girls received hair and make up applications. From there, we took a van over to Soul Cycle Studio's in Tribeca where the girls posed for the press and later went downstairs to ride bikes. All contributoins from the evening went to Pelotonia. Many thanks to Victoria's Secret for giving me the opportunity.

HAIR: by Frankie Foye--Braids to give texture and dimension mixed with textural pony tails. Easy way to contain the hair for exercise, but still have something interesting going on.

MAKE UP: by Ana Marie--Beautiful, healthy, fresh, radiant, glow. Curled lashes combined with waterproof mascara (top & bottom) for exercise. Sheer tinted moisturizer coupled with light lip stain for a fresh and natural look.

New Face to Watch: Nadine Ponce (Brazil) exits the Dolce & Gabbana show

I love it when a new model has effortless style: the shape of the sleeves, the stripes, the simple black almond toe pumps.

Nadine didn't walk any shows in New York, but has walked key directional shows in London like Jonathan Saunders, Richard Nicoli, and Christopher Kane. She's also walked directional shows in Milan like Prada, Marni, Missoni, and today Dolce & Gabbana. I'll be looking for her in Dries and Miu Miu in Paris for sure.

  • Martha Streck (Brazil)

    Martha Streck (Brazil)

Old School enthusiasts would say Martha has 3 things going for her:
    1. Solid Runway--Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Victoria's Secret
    2. Solid Editorial--NUMÉRO China Feb. 2011, Vogue Covers, etc.
    3. Solid Campaigns/Advertising--luxury clients like Bergdorf's and Neiman Marcus, and H&M

As a New School enthusiast I'd add Martha also has
    4. Solid Press Potential--via internet, largely because of her effortless sense of fashion and personableness with photographers. Above, she maintains her classic style base, yet still accessorizes with trendy round sunglasses and platform shoes.
